      <image:title>Blog - The Science Behind Our Thoughts</image:title>
<image:caption>Neurons are nerve cells that are the basic types of cells that make up the brain and nervous system and are responsible for transmitting signals through the body. The neuron structure has three main components: dendrites, axons, and the cell body or the soma. Dendrites are the extensions or "branches" near the soma that receive electrical signals. An axon also called a nerve fiber, is a long structure on the other end of the neuron that sends information away from the soma to other neurons. The soma is where the nucleus is and where the cell's DNA is stored. Neurons in the nervous system do not touch; a synapse is formed between neurons, which obtain and process information as electrical signals. This creates an action potential. When they reach the end of an axon, it causes chemical neurotransmitters to be released, which can relay the signal to other neurons. The culmination of these signals creates a thought.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - About Sophia.</image:title>
<image:caption>Hello! I'm Sophia Mai, and I'm a senior in high school living in Texas. I've always been interested in biology, especially cancer biology and CRISPR technology, art, and computer science. I've also always wanted to inspire others to pursue fields in science or STEM and help them see the implications that these fields in STEM have on our lives outside the classroom. Seeing how illnesses such as hyperthyroidism, and cancer have affected my family, I've developed a passion for learning more about the many aspects of STEM. I started this project because I'm passionate about giving students an equal opportunity to attain a strong interest in STEM and seeing them pursue their dreams regardless of race or ethnicity. The fields in STEM apply to all aspects of our lives, and I hope to foster young interests and help them see the endless knowledge and possibilities in these fields and what more there is to discover and innovate. My mission is to empower, educate, and create an engaging environment for the youth. There are issues, especially in schools, such as low student engagement and the gender divide, and I hope to minimize their effects. We explore biology-related topics and allow the knowledge to be easily accessible to others. Through STEMATA, I hope to foster young interests, help connect the topics taught in the classroom with real-world applications, and explore some of the specific and interesting topics within biology. — Sophia Mai Founder</image:caption>

      <image:title>Mission - About Me.</image:title>
<image:caption>Hello! I'm Sophia Mai, and I'm an incoming junior in high school living in Texas.

<image:title>Home - Current Blog: Systemic Racism in Healthcare</image:title>
<image:caption>Medical professionals exploited, took advantage of, and profited off of Henrietta’s cells, creating a multi-million dollar industry, while she and her family were uninformed of the procedures on Henrietta and the use of her cells. Systemic racism refers to the institutional and structural barriers within a society, perpetuating discriminatory and unjust practices and outcomes for individuals based on their racial identity. It is characterized by the systemic policies, procedures, and structures inherent in society, resulting in unequal access to opportunities, resources, and privileges, such as education, employment, housing, and healthcare. Although the medical field strives to provide equal care to all individuals, systemic racism continues to persist due to issues with informed consent, equitable access to medical care, and historically ingrained stereotypes. Addressing these issues will allow society to circumvent racial barriers and improve patient care overall.</image:caption>
